Early Childhood Assessment and Educational Services (Ages 3-6 Years): A Unique Area of Specialty at the Vancouver Learning Centre

Special programs for young children aged 3-6 years are intended to address two different kinds of needs:

  • Children with developmental delays that prevent them from being successful in regular school programs beginning in the primary grades.
  • Children who show advanced development (potentially gifted and talented early learners) and therefore do not fit easily in regular school programs since they have already learned, or are starting to learn, such skills as reading and mathematics, which their classmates are just beginning to learn.

Expertise in standardized testing of young children using the Stanford-Binet V or the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scales of Intelligence (WPPSI) for children is now available to establish an understanding of the cognitive potential of very young children that allows for early advocacy in schools.

To read about the most recent research see “The Effects of Early Childhood Learning on Life-Long Success and Well-Being”.

Services at the Vancouver Learning Centre are designed to serve both kinds of needs (developmental delays and advanced development). To access information for developmental delays click here. To access services for advanced development click here.

Next Steps

  • If you would like to have answers as to what can be done, you can book a complimentary interview with Vancouver Learning Centre Director Andrew Taylor by telephone at 604-738-2277 or by e-mail.
  • If after you are fully informed through the interview and by reading this website you are interested in proceeding, Andrew will provide you with an assessment date to begin the process.
  • If you have further concerns or questions you can speak to VLC principal and senior psychologist, Dr. Geraldine Schwartz, either by telephone or by booking a further personal complimentary interview.
  • The assessment will provide a clear statement of the student’s cognitive and educational strengths and weaknesses along with a detailed program that is offered as a proposal. The program is delivered by the Vancouver Learning Centre’s highly qualified teaching faculty, one-to-one.
