Preparation for Post-Secondary Mathematics

Is this right for me?

Are you about to take a post-secondary mathematics or statistics course and are feeling nervous? Has it been a long time since you've taken math or have you always struggled with the subject? Have you taken the course before and would like to improve your grades? Then this is the program for you!

How will this help?

This program at the Vancouver learning Centre has been specially designed to provide students with the skills they need to be successful in any first or second year post-secondary mathematics or statistics course. Years of experience as well as scientific studies have shown us that success in mathematics after high school requires students to think independently and apply their knowledge in new and often challenging ways. Unfortunately, high schools are not always able to prepare their students for these new challenges, and that's where we come in!

In this program we give students a full review of key concepts and procedures from high school mathematics while teaching them how to apply these skills for themselves. Concepts covered will be tailored to the needs of each student and to the specific course they will be taking. Students will also receive explicit training in mathematical problem solving. Through this training they will learn to work through a problem independently and with great diligence. Finally, students will receive the type of coaching in time management and study skills that the VLC has been using to create successful learners for over 30 years!

What does it involve?

If you think this is the right program for you, your first step will be to set up a meeting with one of the VLC's directors. From there you would be given the option of doing a full psycho-educational assessment with one of our highly trained psychologists. This assessment would give you and your teachers valuable information about how your brain works and will enable us to better tailor our instruction to your specific needs.

At this point we would put together a specialized curriculum, and set up a class schedule with you. Instruction would take place at the VLC in a one to one setting with one of our highly trained teaching staff. We suggest that students schedule 2 to 6 hours of instruction each week for a period of 2 or 3 months, depending on the needs of the students.

If you elect to have an assessment, we can also offer extra support and tutoring throughout the school year, to help you achieve exciting new levels of success!

If you do not choose to do an assessment, this program is available in May, June, July and August.

When is the best time to do this program?

We suggest that students undertake this program in the few months prior to participation in a post-secondary mathematics or statistics course. We also recommend that students be prepared to commit a significant amount of time to this program. We anticipate that for many students the best time would be in the summer months of May-August, however the best time is really the time that works best for you!

Finally, if you are in university and have ongoing difficulty getting the grades you need in math, this program may make all the difference.
